Welcome back, cloud enthusiasts! Today, we're going to compare the costs of three popular container registries: AWS ECR, GCP Container Registry, and Azure Container Registry. As always, we’ll be providing factual and unbiased comparison, so you can make an informed decision based on your needs.
Before we start, let's establish some ground rules. First, we'll be comparing prices based on a scenario where you store 1TB of data each month in the container registry. Second, prices vary across regions, so we'll be using the most popular region for each provider. AWS ECR
AWS ECR pricing structure is based on Standard, Advanced, and Basic tiers. The Standard tier charges $0.10 per GB per month for storage and $0.10 per GB transferred out. However, for our comparison, we’ll use the Basic tier, which charges $0.10 per GB per month for storage with unlimited data transfers.
Thus, storing 1TB of data on AWS ECR will cost:

GCP Container Registry’s pricing also varies depending on the user's region, but for the sake of this comparison, we’ll use the us-central1 region, which is one of the most commonly used regions. GCP Container Registry charges $0.10 per GB per month for storage, and the first 1GB transferred out is free. After that, GCP charges $0.12 per GB transferred out.
Thus, storing 1TB of data on GCP Container Registry will cost:
$0.10 * 1,000 = $100.00And transferring out 1TB of data will cost:
($0.12 * 999) + $0.00 = $119.88Azure Container Registry
Finally, let’s compare the prices of Azure Container Registry. Azure Container Registry pricing is based on the capacity of the container registry. For our comparison, we’ll use a Standard registry, which charges $0.167 per GB per month for the first 10TB of storage.
Thus, storing 1TB of data on Azure Container Registry will cost:
$0.167 * 1,000 = $167.00Conclusion
From this comparison, we can see that AWS ECR and GCP Container Registry offer almost identical pricing for storing and transferring data. Azure Container Registry, however, is significantly more expensive than AWS ECR and GCP Container Registry.
